Sapper’s Day 2009

A small but quality group of older sappers marked Sapper’s Day 2009 in Gisborne with an early morning flag raising at the RSA. Pictured here are Terry Haste, left (2Const Sqn 6Indep Fd Sqn); John Foley (WWII and JForce) and Des Omundsen (RF Cadet 1960, 2Const Sqn; Engr Team and 161 Bty Vietnam). Barry Allison (Pattie St 1973-93) is behind the camera. A brief moment’s contemplation for those sappers who have passed on and those who serve today followed the flag raising; and then a toast to the Corps in the appropriate fashion. Breakfast was at Barry’s place before Terry took the group into the Wharerata Forest for a first-hand look at modern logging and timber transport systems. The flag was lowered at 5pm and the stayers (just two guess who!) then enjoyed a BBQ venison supper before polishing off the rum to an accompaniment of tall tales but true! Well that’s our story and we’re sticking to it! Many thanks go to 2 Engr Regt RSM WOI Shane Vooght, who loaned us the flag, and to Gisborne RSA for their kind permission to fly it for the day.
